Hermione Newton is a multidisciplinary artist and BA Fine Art graduate from Goldsmiths, University of London whose practice seeks to enkindle countercultural currents through exploratory and unconventional psychogeographic methodologies. Walking and mapping become embodied modes of research through which the shifting relational nexus between female experience and place - its histories, communities, ecologies, and inhabitants - is activated and interrogated.

Working across photography, ceramics, sound, sculpture, and text, Hermione develops a site-responsive, materially driven, and poetic visual language that documents the experience of walking as a woman through Britain’s urban and rural landscapes. Her work draws upon mythological, folkloric, and hauntological frameworks to unearth residual cultures, lost commons, and submerged histories, while challenging and reconfiguring the phallocentric traditions of flânerie and walking art.

Recent work includes a triptych installation centred on a nine-day, 184-mile expedition walking and wild camping along the Thames Path, from the Thames Barrier in Woolwich, London, to the source of the River Thames in Kemble, Gloucestershire. Comprising early photographic print processes, ancient firing techniques using foraged river clay, hand-sewn patchwork tapestries, poetic sculptural forms, and long-duration soundscapes, the installation traces an upstream journey through the spectral residues of labour, habitation, ecology, and collective memory that linger along the river's course.

Ambulant and forward-leaning, Hermione’s practice treads the tributaries of hegemonic spatial structures toward archaeofictioned terrains. In her work, temporality is mobilised; a passage through thresholds opens up, and we may drift through. By acts of walking, listening, collecting, and making, alternative ways of inhabiting and understanding place emerge - attentive to what lingers, what is obscured, and what remains possible.
