How to Create a Free Online Artist Portfolio

Looking for a simple portfolio you can set up quickly and without cost? Whether you're a recent art school graduate or an established artist seeking a clean online presence, having a portfolio is essential in today's digital world.

Where to Build Your Portfolio

Several platforms allow you to create a portfolio without any coding knowledge. Each has its strengths and limitations.

Website builders like Wix, Squarespace, and Webflow offer elegant designs and extensive customization options. However, free tiers typically display platform branding, and you'll need a paid plan for a custom domain. According to discussions on Reddit, these tools work well for artists who want full control over their site's appearance, but they require time to set up and maintain.

Dedicated art platforms like Behance and ArtStation are built specifically for creatives. Behance is particularly popular among graphic designers and offers good visibility within the Adobe ecosystem. Users note, however, that standing out among millions of projects can be challenging, and profile customization is limited. ArtStation dominates in the game art and concept art space.

Tools like Canva Websites or Google Sites are beginner-friendly but aren't designed primarily for art portfolios and have limited SEO and design capabilities. You'll find many other trending platforms through a quick search.

Saatchi Art is a prestigious global gallery with strong brand recognition, primarily targeting affluent collectors in the US and UK. They offer turnkey logistics, an Art Advisory team, and extensive marketing. The downsides include a high commission rate (35%), a heavy focus on the American market, and intense competition—without active promotion or curator selection, your profile can easily get lost in the crowd.

Artmajeur is a French marketplace with stronger presence in Europe. It offers lower commissions (15–35% depending on membership), solid SEO across Europe, and the option for custom webpages. The drawbacks include a visually cluttered interface where top-tier work appears alongside amateur pieces, plus monthly fees to unlock full features.

Instagram as Your Portfolio?

Many artists today use Instagram as their primary portfolio. It's convenient—you get reach, engagement, and stories. But if you're uncomfortable with being dependent on Meta's algorithm, want something different from everyone else, or simply need a clean page to share with galleries and curators, you might be looking for an alternative or complement. Many older collectors don't use Instagram at all.

A mini portfolio can serve as a professional gateway: a straightforward page showcasing your best work that you control, linking wherever you want—to your Instagram, shop, or personal website.

ArtGraduates Mini Portfolio

ArtGraduates offers a forever-free mini portfolio for visual artists. During a single-step registration, you can upload one profile image and up to ten of your best pieces. Your bio can be up to 800 characters, and you get one external link—perfect for directing visitors to your Instagram or shop. This link is a dofollow link, meaning search engines like Google recognize that a trusted site links to your page, which helps boost your own website's ranking. Most major platforms only provide nofollow links that don't strengthen your site's search position.

What You Get (Always Free)

  • 1 profile image + up to 10 of your best artworks
  • Bio up to 800 characters
  • 1 external dofollow link (to your Instagram, shop, or website)
  • Clean URL with your name: artgraduates.com/artist/your-name
  • Easy updates anytime—swap images for newer work
  • Sell directly from artwork descriptions—zero commission
  • Promotion on our social media channels
  • Automatic entry into the ArtGraduates Award

Why ArtGraduates?

You can update your profile whenever you like—replace images as you create better work. Add prices to your artwork descriptions and sell directly to buyers without any commission. Your URL contains your name (e.g., artgraduates.com/artist/jane-smith), which works well for sharing and SEO purposes.

If you already own a domain but don't want to pay for hosting, you can redirect it to your ArtGraduates portfolio. Most profiles are also promoted on our social media channels, giving you additional exposure.

Selected artists—chosen by our international jury of renowned artists, curators, and collectors—receive priority placement, inclusion in print publications, and invitations to exhibitions and collector events.

Your First Portfolio

This mini portfolio is also ideal as a first portfolio for artists who have no online presence at all. If you don't have a website, Instagram, or any other page to link to, simply leave the Portfolio / Website field empty during registration – your profile will work perfectly without any external link. Note: In cases where names coincide with existing profiles, the URL is typically extended with your technique and country.

This way, your ArtGraduates page becomes your complete online identity—a single, professional link you can share on business cards, in emails, or anywhere else. As you grow and eventually create your own website or shop, you can update the external link anytime to direct visitors there instead.

Is There a Catch?

ArtGraduates is a curated platform. If you're a serious artist—whether you're studying fine arts, are a recent or long-time graduate, or a passionate outsider whose form and message carry authentic depth—you're welcome here. Low-quality profiles are typically removed within three days. This curation keeps the platform valuable for collectors and curators who come here specifically to discover quality work. If you'd like to verify in advance that your profile will pass our filter, send us your portfolio address by email to [email protected] and we'll let you know as soon as possible.
