Natália Okolicsányiová (1984) studied painting at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica (2010), where, 9 years later, she completed her doctoral studies in the Studio of Critical Image Analysis. Her work focuses on exploring the category of beauty as a fluid, ambivalent, and culturally conditioned phenomenon. “Beauty” does not appear as an aesthetic quality in the traditional sense, but as an open concept that can be both appealing and unsettling, both sensory and abstract, both defined and dissolved in the process. The artist’s paintings, drawings, and collages do not appear as final, closed artifacts; they are the result of a continuous process in which form and meaning emerge through layering, rewriting, and repeated returns to motifs. The works oscillate between the material and the metaphysical, creating a fluid, distinctly feminine imaginative space. Gesturality, spontaneity, and intimate emotionality intertwine with a conscious engagement with symbolism. The dominant pink color palette – at times almost candy-saturated – functions as a sign that both affirms and ironically subverts aesthetic appeal. During her time as a painter, she has exhibited mainly in Slovakia in several solo and several group exhibitions. In addition to painting, she is also a teacher and works at the Department of Art and Culture, Faculty of Education at the Comenius University in Bratislava.
