Jan Turner
Between 1993 and 1998, I studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU) under Prof. Demartini and Kokolia. My work focuses primarily on object-based sculpture, complemented by drawing and occasionally painting. I work with commonly available materials that carry inherent meaning and remain comprehensible even outside the context of art. I strive to create objects with an emphasis on compositional refinement and a strong metaphorical charge, intended to subtly shift the perception of reality. I draw attention to the fact that our interpretation of the world is a fragile agreement, a tool for understanding it. I frequently work with semantic contradiction or error as an image of the limits of human knowledge. I draw attention to the fact that the world cannot be fully understood. What I understand and can describe is merely the realm of language we have created. In recent years, I have been exploring the phenomenon of artistic narcissism, examining its function, benefits, and pitfalls within the context of creative practice. In my drawing, I let myself be guided by the unconscious. It is straightforwardly self-centred and reveals my unconscious relationship to the world. My occasional painting is a variant of object-based work.
