Marie Butula Cichá
I am a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology (2005–2012). In my work, I interweave painting and drawing with a strong narrative thread – I construct each picture as a literary story with a central character set within a specific plot framework. I work with motifs of lost young heroines, metamorphosed figures, animals, and landscapes scarred by drought or wildfire as metaphors for personal and generational uncertainty. I draw inspiration from the patterns of primordial fairy tales whose contemporary form, however, lacks a happy ending and draws attention to the toxicity of today's reality. I build on the Symbolist and Decadent tradition, which I develop with elements of dark feminine mysticism, sarcasm, and unsettling poetics.
