Jan Svoboda
Jan Svoboda (*1957 in Nové Město na Moravě) is a painter who realised long ago that sometimes a few lines, a horizon and a well-placed colour are all it takes – and a painting starts to work better than any elaborate explanation of the world. From figures and symbols he gradually moved toward a looser abstraction, where the leading roles go to calm, space and colours inspired by the landscape of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, where he lives and works.
He paints mainly in acrylic on canvas, but every so often he slips away into drawing, objects or his own furniture. In short, when he isn't painting a picture, a table might turn up instead. He is a member of the artists' association Umělecká beseda and has more than 190 solo exhibitions behind him, so it is fair to say he hangs his paintings in galleries with a fair amount of experience by now.
