Ian Henderson
Ian Henderson was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, UK, in 1939. He studied painting at Banbury School of Art, Oxford School of Art and Swansea College of Art, and began teaching art and design in 1962. In 1964 he became the first artist appointed to a UK new town development corporation, followed by a Gulbenkian Fellowship in Painting at the University of Keele and a period as the first Artist in Residence at Brock University, Ontario. Ian came to Australia with his family in 1972. He taught visual arts and design at Newcastle University, Queensland College of Art and the University of New England. He gained a Doctorate in Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong in 1993. His paintings are held in public collections in Australia and the UK. An author as well as a fine artist, he continues to paint and write. He is a Petherick Reader at the National Library of Australia and a Permanent Honorary Member of the National Portrait Gallery.
