Helena Blaško
The subjects of my work range from purely internal abstract landscapes to more illustrative images of external reality, inspired by fantasy, active imagination, personal experiences, and archetypal myths. I work in series that loosely follow one another. Recently, their common feature has been vertical mirror symmetry. Whether large-format charcoal drawings or small watercolours, from a web of lines and stains I gradually let more concrete forms and narratives emerge, which I intuitively connect and mirror in compositions reminiscent of clasped hands or totems. Painting and drawing are for me a form of meditation and a way of touching the free world hidden beneath the surface of everyday life.
I graduated from M. Mainer’s painting studio at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology (FaVU) in 2004. Before that, I studied at the Faculty of Art and Design in Ústí nad Labem (FUD UJEP) in K. Míšek’s printmaking studio. Alongside my own practice, I have long been involved in teaching, with an emphasis on psychophysical experience and an eco-humanistic approach to creativity.
